LUCAYAN - The Lucayan Tainos lived on the islands for many peaceful centuries until Columbus' arrival destroyed their way of life. Lucayan artifacts such as the wooden duho tell the story of a spiritual, advanced people. Historians say the duho is a large, reclining Chieftain's seat. Decorated with carved symbols, these seats have been found in caves in The Bahamas and may have been used in funeral ceremonies and/or as birthing stools. Our stoneware duhos are hand-built sculptural pieces and also make great candle holders and soap dishes. Click "Next" to see terra cotta vases.

Pottery making was essential to the Lucayan way of life. Early Bahamian pottery involved rolling clay into coils, shaping it into vessels and firing in open hearths. Our hand built Terra Cotta series is inspired by this process. This page is still being updated. Stay tuned for pics of "Palmetto Ware" developed by Jansu Pottery using a clay mix containing locally harvested clay.
